What is Botox, and how does it work?

Botox is a prescription medication applied safely by our skilled Cosmetic Nurse Injector. It’s injected into the muscles beneath the skin of the forehead and around the eyes and mouth, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Botox works by gently relaxing those muscles, and when they’ve stopped contracting, fine lines, wrinkles, and creases smooth out, leaving a more youthful appearance.

Is there a prep period for Botox treatment?

Not as such. Our practitioners in our office in Mansfield, Ohio, consult with you to discuss all your options, and if you decide Botox is the right treatment for you we can begin the procedure right away. There is no prep time, but we want to make sure you’re comfortable and have weighed all your options before treatment begins.

Do Botox injections hurt?

Everyone has a different tolerance for pain, and you’re not alone in wondering if there’s pain associated with this treatment. The majority of patients receiving the procedure describe the injections as feeling like a light pinch, with some reporting that they didn’t feel anything at all. We can discuss any fears you may have during your initial consultation, and if you’re sensitive to pain we can apply a topical anesthetic to reduce any discomfort.

Is Botox treatment harmful?

Botox has been safely administered to thousands of patients around the world. It’s been approved for use in 95 countries, and is FDA-approved in the United States. The vast majority of people experience no ill effects from Botox treatment. Botox remains and will remain a safe, effective treatment for fine lines and wrinkles.

When can I start seeing the results of Botox treatment?

You’ll begin to enjoy results soon after treatment, typically within one to two days after the procedure.

How long does Botox last?

While it varies depending on the individual, most people enjoy the effects of Botox for three to four months following the procedure. As you follow your schedule of treatment your muscles will “learn” to relax on their own, providing results that last longer.

How many Botox treatments should I get?

To fully enjoy the effects of Botox treatment, we recommend that you schedule treatments every three to four months depending upon your response to the procedure. We’ll work with you to develop a schedule of treatment that will leave you looking more youthful for as long as you want to continue receiving Botox.

Do you have to be “older” to get Botox treatment?

No. Fine lines and wrinkles can appear in some people at an early age – there is a genetic component that can result in the appearance of wrinkles sooner than most people experience them, and prolonged exposure to the sun can also hasten the development of lines and creases in the skin, so there is really no age limit restricting Botox treatment. That said, Botox is typically not recommended for those under 18.

Do I need to plan on downtime when I receive Botox?

Botox treatment typically results in no downtime at all, with the majority of patients resuming normal activities the same day as the procedure. There are some post-treatment recommendations that allow Botox to work most effectively: you should avoid rubbing or scratching the injection area; you should sleep on your back the night after the procedure; and you should avoid alcohol consumption and strenuous exercise for 24 hours following treatment.
