Dermal Fillers

As the body ages, the subcutaneous fat that gave our features definition diminishes, and without that support, facial features can begin to sag. Dermal fillers can take the place of subcutaneous fat to help reduce those signs of aging by lifting and supporting the skin and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Fillers can also help plump up areas of the face, such as lips. If you’re interested in dermal fillers, Advanced Dermatology of North Central Ohio can help.

If you’d like to discuss what dermal fillers can do for you, please contact our Mansfield office either via phone at 419-756-1600 or by using our online form. We’d love to schedule a consultation to see if dermal fillers are the right choice.

Dermal Fillers FAQs

At Advanced Dermatology of North Central Ohio we field a lot of questions about dermal fillers and their role in reducing the appearance of aging. We’ve collected a number of the most common questions our patients ask.

Although any cosmetic procedure carries a certain degree of risk, dermal fillers are widely considered safe. They are FDA approved and widely used as a non-invasive alternative to plastic surgery. Dermal fillers have a long history of safe use in patients throughout the world.

During your initial consultation we will discuss the safety of the different types of dermal fillers and decide which will work best for you.

There are many different types of dermal fillers, each specifically designed to treat parts of the face. Here are a few of the most popular fillers:

Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid is found in many brand-name dermal fillers, including such well-known fillers as Juvederm, Captique, Puragen, and Elevess. Naturally found in the body, hyaluronic acid is used for, among other things, easing arthritis pain in joints. When used in cosmetic procedures this substance can address the following conditions:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Smile lines
  • Depressed scars from burns, acne, and wounds
  • Marionette lines
  • Worry lines

Polylactic Acid: Polylactic acid is a stimulator, which means that it stimulates your body’s natural production of collagen. Used under the brand name Sculptra, polylactic acid has been used in medical settings for more than 40 years. This filler is used to:

  • Treat the long lines that run from the sides of the nose to the edges of the mouth (also known as nasolabial folds)
  • Add fullness to and plump thin lips
  • Fill in laugh lines

Calcium Hydroxylapatite: This dermal filler, known by the brand name Radiesse, is found naturally in the body. It’s used more often to treat the following:

  • Frown lines
  • Sagging cheeks
  • Marionette lines (the lines that run from the corner of the mouth downward)
  • Nasolabial folds

Typically you don’t have to plan for any downtime following the injection of dermal fillers.

The most common side effects are mild and include tenderness and redness around the injection site, along with mild bruising and swelling. These effects should subside within one to two weeks.

It depends on the filler, but most initially show some results immediately following the procedure. More long lasting results occur after the filler has a chance to merge with the tissue, which can take up to a month.

While both are injectable and while they address many of the same conditions, there is quite a bit of difference between the two. Dermal fillers are substances that fill the areas beneath the skin while stimulating collagen production, whereas Botox treats fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing the muscles underneath the skin.
