What is Surgical Excision?

Surgical excision is a common treatment used in dermatology that involves numbing the area with a local anesthetic and cutting out (i.e. excising) the affected area. Additionally, a portion of healthy skin surrounding the area is removed, which is referred to as the “margin.”

Once the excision is complete, your surgeon will then close the site with stitches. In some cases, your doctor may recommend a skin graft or flap if the excision site is larger than normal. This fosters optimal healing and improves the appearance of the scar.
